Help your child dream, grow, and reach their full potential!

Having books in the home is crucial for a child’s academic, social, and emotional development. 90% of physical brain development occurs in the first three years of life! Reading aloud to children at a young age:

  • Helps children to be ready to read and ready to learn in Kindergarten.

  • Fosters a unique bond between children and their parents or caregivers.

A young child with curly hair wearing pajamas sitting at a table, looking at and touching an educational children's book or activity book with colorful images. In the background, there is a television, a white TV stand, and various household items.

The Imagination Library extends this impact by providing books to children, free of charge, nurturing their minds and hearts. The books are customized with the child’s name and sent directly to their home from Dolly, creating a special gifting experience that makes reading exciting and lets the child know they are cherished.

Our Story

Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly Parton started the Imagination Library in 1995 to serve the children of her hometown in Sevier County, Tennessee. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts over 3 million books each month to children around the world.

In Montana, First Lady Susan Gianforte was so inspired by the program’s impact that she led the effort to expand Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in the state. In June 2023, in partnership with The Dollywood Foundation, Dolly Parton's nonprofit organization, she announced that the program was available statewide. This expansion means books are now available for free to children until their 5th birthday in every county in Montana.
